Andrew Russell was the second Australian mine casualty in Afghanistan.
Just a month earlier, on 17 January 2002, SAS Trooper ‘Sal’ lost part of his foot when he stepped on an anti-personnel mine during a mission to destroy a huge arms cache north of Kandahar.
His patrol had discovered three large bunkers filled with an estimated 15 tonnes of munitions including mines, mortars and artillery shells. They were clearing the area and preparing to detonate the cache when Sal stepped on the few square centimetres of ground that no one else had set foot on.
Trooper John was the patrol medic at the scene, but by the time he got his medkit out and reached his mate, six other soldiers were already working on Sal.
‘Everyone’s training just kicked in and there was some awesome hive of activity going on,’ says John now.
The blast had taken several of Sal’s toes with it and inflicted minor wounds to his hands and eyes. As the patrol medics moved him to a safer spot, treated his injuries and administered painkillers, the commanders radioed for air support to evacuate their wounded mate.
‘At one stage I was going to go with him because I was the senior medic,’ says John, ‘but the Americans had two of their medics on the chopper, so it was better that I stay with the patrol. We put him on top of one of our vehicles, moved him down to where we could call the chopper in, and extracted him like that. It was all over fairly quickly. Then we finished the job, blew up the hill and all of the tanks and all of the equipment on there, and went from there.’
